Family is what I value most. Home is where my family gathers, feels safe, lets down our defenses, gets comfortable, and gets nourished, spiritually and physically.
We have started to under go a full house makeover. We don't really have a budget, not that we are so rich we don't need one, to the contrary, we can't afford one. Every penny has to be spent very frugally.
Our home is a 114 year old home on a brick street, though not in a historic district, it is a splendidly built house with lots of character. However, most of the character has been covered up over the years. When we moved in 12 years ago there were drop ceilings, multiple layers of flooring, and really bad electrical. Lots of DIY projects gone awry. So little by little we are uncovering all that potential we saw when we bought the place, of course having five kids along the way has taken some of the umph out of our enthusiasm, but we are pushing through to get this puppy finished.
First, we tore out the drop ceilings. Yuck! Who puts a wood plank drop ceiling at 7 ft in the living room that has nine foot ceilings? Then adds track lighting? And who closes off the 20 ft tall stair case ceiling with acoustic tiles? Who runs extension cords above ceiling tiles instead of wiring for light fixtures? Who puts ceiling fans in almost every room? Who layers subfloor, linoleum, subfloor, linoleum, subfloor, linoleum on top of original hardwood floors? The people who lived here before us, that's who! All of this is gone. Praise the LORD!
We painted the dinning room a minty green, which it still is and will stay, I love it so much. It reminds me jadeite. Our living room, on the other hand, has been peach, blue, yellow, and now tan. I am thinking of painting it light grey. It is hard to find the right color to go with the wood work, which was never painted in the living room, halls, stairs, and two of the three bedrooms. I can not bring myself to paint the wood white. It was already painted in the dinning room, kitchen, bathroom, and smallest bedroom so I don't feel bad about repainting them. The bedrooms have all been various colors also.
I will start off by showing some before pictures here, then some of the changes we have made so far, and then changes we are currently making. I have had a vision for this house since we first saw it and it looks like it is finally starting to take shape. Big plans and dreams, like chandeliers in bedrooms and a completely new kitchen with vintage touches. Even some outside finishing touches like a back porch, expanding flower gardens, and sprucing up patios. So sit back and enjoy a 12 year smorgasbord of DIY and renovation before and after's culminating in our (hopefully) last renovation splurge of our life in this home.
